Job Description
The Technician is responsible for the maintenance and repair on all buses and box trucks including planning, scheduling, repair and preventative maintenance as needed to ensure the availability of vehicles in safe operating condition.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Perform a full range of skilled mechanical maintenance, diagnostic, inspection and repair duties on trucks and buses.
- Inspect, diagnose, adjust and repair gas and diesel powered buses and trucks.
- Determine repairs that should be performed by others and coordinate with local repair facilities; ensure charges are fair by doing comparisons for work done.
- Implement and perform a preventative maintenance program on the bus fleet and trucks.
- Ensure concerns identified by bus drivers are fully addressed.
- Responsible for the overall maintenance of the interior and exterior of vehicles including upholstery, paint, wiring, lighting, etc.
- Coordinate tire work (e.g. changing, balancing) for the purpose of ensuring all buses and equipment are operating on safe tires.
- Maintain inventory of parts and supplies on hand for the repair of vehicles; contact and compare vendors to obtain high quality supplies for the best price.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area; coordinate, maintain and repair shop facilities and equipment.
- Document all work using computer software.
- Process parts/repairs invoices and receipts.
- Perform annual safety inspections and confirm compliance with State requirements.
- Perform work in adherence to safe work practices and procedures and in compliance with applicable standards and specifications, remain current on all laws pertaining to safe maintenance and repair of buses.
- Provide input and inspections on equipment purchases.
- Assist with training garage student employees.
- Assist Vehicle Technician as needed.
- Be part of on-call rotation to respond to vehicle-related emergencies (jump starts, flat tires, no starts, etc.). Coordinate with other Transportation employees on the service needs for college vehicles.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Methods, techniques and procedures used in the inspection, maintenance, repair and adjustment of gas and diesel powered equipment.
- Operating and repair characteristics of a variety of automotive and bus diagnostic and repair equipment and tools.
- Methods, techniques and procedures used in the repair and adjustment of fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems and chassis.
- Methods and techniques of performing welding and electrical work on motorized vehicles and equipment.
- Procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive and bus vehicles. Laws, rules and regulations pertaining to bus operations and transportation.
- Principles, practices and procedures of recycling and disposing of hazardous waste from motorized vehicles and equipment.
- Operational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the area of assigned work.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Safe driving principles and practices.
SKILL AND ABILITY TO:
- Operate the full range of diagnostic, maintenance and repair equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Operate a bus and motor vehicle safely.
- Perform the full range of journey level mechanical work, including the diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing of equipment.
- Inspect, maintain, repair and adjust gas and diesel powered equipment. Repair and adjust fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems and chassis.
- Perform methods of welding on motorized vehicles and equipment. Perform electrical work on motorized vehicles and equipment.
- Patch and install seat covers and other accessories.
- Accurately determine mechanical repair needs. Interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum three years experience as a mechanic, including experience working with buses, gas and diesel engines, hydraulic systems and air brake systems.
ASE certified technician and ability to maintain certification.
Possession of a valid CDL license with School Bus endorsement preferred. Ability to obtain a valid license within 12 months of hire will be considered.
Physical Demands
This position requires remaining in a sitting or lying position for frequent periods of time, often under vehicles; sometimes includes crouching, bending, and having to work in confined spaces or on ladders. This position often works in non-climate controlled spaces. Occasionally involves moving and lifting items over 50 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
