Overview

The Transportation Services Department manages NIU's vehicle fleet (approximately 200 vehicles) which ranges from sedans, to cargo vans, to dump trucks, etc. We are looking for a skilled auto mechanic to join our team as an Automotive Technician. The person in this position will be tasked with regular/routine preventative maintenance tasks and emergency repairs to university vehicles.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of university vehicles. This allows Transportation Services to provide safe, clean and economical transportation to the university community. This position will report directly to the Garage Foreman who will determine priorities for work assignments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Major maintenance - 25%
- Maintain brake systems, including installing and adjusting brakes
- Repair vehicle HVAC
- Maintain and repair transmissions, differentials and other moving parts of the vehicle
- Perform tune-ups and change filters
Extensive maintenance - 25%
- Perform repairs and maintenance as necessary of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, hybrid and computer systems, pumps, fuel injection and carburetion
Vehicle maintenance - 25%
- Perform repairs and maintenance as necessary to all university vehicles, including, but not limited to, sedans, vans, trucks, trailers and buses
Shop Duties - 18%
- General maintenance to the university automotive fleet, such as pumping gas & washing the vehicles
- Pick-up of parts for the Transportation Department as well as other campus departments
- Install, maintain, repair and remove additional equipment
- Other activities as required
Miscellaneous related duties - 7%
- Perform minor body repair to the vehicles as necessary
- Dispatch pool vehicles
- Perform other miscellaneous, related duties as assigned
Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Possession of a valid driver's license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicle(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
- Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the following categories:
- Coursework in automotive body repair, automotive mechanics technology, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Successful completion of a certification test by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence ( ASE ) equals one (1) year (12 months).
- Professional (i.e., full-service commercial, military, governmental, educational) work experience performing general mechanical work on various types of vehicles.
- Coursework in automotive body repair, automotive mechanics technology, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) (Civil Service)
- Knowledge of general ignition and carburetor systems, synchronizing equipment, vacuum and test gauges, brake testing, wheel alignment, light testing equipment, transmissions, air conditioning, and power steering.
- Knowledge of the operations of vehicles, equipment and machinery used in unit.
- Skill in the use of hand tools, (such as wrenches, pliers, and screwdrivers).
- Mechanical ability.
- Ability to operate machine or shop tools (tire machines, small grinder/buffer).
- Ability to perform general maintenance on various equipment.
- Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
